The founder as the message

By Anil Sharma, Founder, ThinkQue Consulting

At some point in a company’s life, its founder becomes one of its most powerful communication assets. Most leave that asset unmanaged.

I spend a good part of my work advising leaders on how they show up in public, and I want to say something that sounds immodest but is simply true. In a growing business, the founder is often the clearest expression of what the company stands for. People trust a person more readily than they trust a logo. They want to know who is behind the thing they are being asked to believe in.

For a long time this was underused in India, where a certain reticence kept many capable founders quiet. That has changed, and rightly. Leaders now build a public voice. But there is a real difference between having a voice and building one on purpose, and most of the risk sits in that gap.

An accidental founder voice tends to drift. It posts when inspired, chases whatever is trending that week, and slowly becomes indistinguishable from every other leader saying sensible things about resilience and culture. A deliberate founder voice is narrower and far stronger. It stands for a small number of ideas, returns to them consistently, and is willing to hold a point of view that not everyone will share.

If I were advising a founder starting today, I would offer three things. Decide what you want to be known for, the two or three themes you have genuine authority on, and resist the pull to comment on everything else. Say what you actually believe, because a voice with no edge persuades no one, and an audience can always tell the difference between a conviction and a content calendar. And be consistent, because trust in a voice is built by showing up with the same values over years, not by going viral once.

The founder voice is not a marketing channel bolted on to a person. Done honestly, it is the person, made legible. That is exactly why it deserves to be built with care rather than left to chance.

The founder voice is not a channel. It is the person, made legible. Build it on purpose.
